Reimagined in Cold Foil
For The Art of Shine — The Fusion of Art and Foil, we invited Thai artists to see their work in a new light, replacing gold leaf and lacquer with cold foil. The collection was shown at PACK PRINT INTERNATIONAL 2025 (BITEC, Bangkok · Booth F27 · 17–21 September).
Cold foil is usually thought of as a production tool. We wanted to see it as an artist's medium. Working with each artist, we reprinted their paintings and applied cold foil to the details — bringing a new kind of light to Thai lacquer, ink, and gold-leaf traditions.
Each in Its Own Light
A closer look at a few works from the collection. Each artist brought a different idea, and each idea called for its own foil.
The Royal Coronation Ceremony from Indra 3 · Assoc. Prof. Niroj Jarungjitvittawat
The painting depicts a historic royal ceremony featuring a giant "Yak" statue that people could enter and explore. The original was created in the Kam-ma-lor technique with lacquer, gold and pigment. For the reprint, gold cold foil replaces the gold leaf, adding dimension and prominence to every pattern.
The Balance of Nature No.2 · Varoot Phongpak (Peatch)
Varoot paints nature as a cycle of life and death, where every ending feeds a new beginning. Rainbow holographic foil turns the animals into shifting light, adding dimension while carrying the full meaning of the concept.
Silent Majesty · Nattanon Baiphowongse (KIN)
A still peacock, inspired by classic portrait painting, painted in Japanese ink and acrylic on gold leaf. Cold foil overprinted with color makes the peacock stand out in metallic blue and green, while keeping its calm and elegance.
The Rice of Life · Thongchai Poochai (Fuse)
Inspired by the rice fields of his homeland, Thongchai created the original in Thai lacquer technique. Because lacquer work already lives in gold, it translated naturally into foil: two shades of gold cold foil give the reprint the same warmth and depth.
Inside The Art of Shine
The works were shown together at The Art of Shine, where visitors could see the foil up close.
Ten works came together for the exhibition — Thai mythology, quiet still lifes, wildlife, and portraits — each one reimagined in foil.
